One cannot hike very long on the AFT before crossing the path of this common plant. Found primarily on the north-facing sides of valleys and along most streams, rhododendron fills the forest with it’s beautiful blooms in late May or early June. Possessing an incredibly hardy and dense wood, it’s thick, waxy leaves survive the oftentimes harsh winters with ease. As the elevation increases, it yields to another pink bloom and Pennsylvania’s state flower, mountain laurel.
