In stark contrast to the vistas of the eastern edge of the trail loop, much of the AFT wanders along trout streams through corridors of rhododendron and shady stands of hemlock. Moss-coverd rocks and various species of ferns cover the forest floor, sprinked with colorful mushrooms, teaberries and an occasional “lady slipper.” Under thick stands of hemlock and white pine, the fallen needles comprise a cushiony, pitch-scented carpet.
